The mains transformer being the very heart of any high quality power supply, the TPX2 is graced with TWO of the superb AST laminated transformers - one for each regulator module. With two quite separate secondary circuits, designed specifically for low external noise and an absence of spurious harmonics, this is the lowest noise power supply system we have ever measured.

What does all this mean? Well, unless the sine wave from the mains supply is transformed without aberrations, the capacitor banks and subsequent regulator systems - however technically clever - will never be able to remove the final traces of any mains borne aberrations. Result? small detail veiling with an untidy treble performance, detracting hugely from the enjoyment of the music.

After being rectified by some fast recovery diodes for lower spurious effects, the resulting DC (Direct Current), is passed into the first large storage capacitor. From this area, the DC is further smoothed by high current inductors for the removal of the final vestiges of nastiness from the supply lines and passed into the second high quality storage capacitor.

Having ensured we have the finest raw material - the rectified DC supply - we're now free to begin to put all that power to work beginning with a fairly conventional voltage controlled primary regulator followed by a series of storage capacitors selected for ripple rejection along with a speed of delivery necessary to portray those fast transients without sonic losses.

At last, we have the perfect reservoir from which to draw high quality current without any hesitation in the duty of powering the preamplifier circuits.

We haven't nearly finished though - tranquil as it may be, that area of regulation may be considered sufficient for some designers but not for us: A series regulator of deceptive sophistication then follows the primary regulator section of this unique power unit. Known as a 'voltage locked, tracking pre-regulator' system, the final output from the circuits has been designed to have all the characteristics of a perfect supply. Feedback of the first regulator is use to control the final regulator meaning a stunningly efficient method of maintaining the ideal characteristics needed for accurate reproduction of an audio signal.

Speed and scale of delivery, whilst being paramount, are not the only requirements - the ability to stop after a heavy current delivery is crucial if much detail is not to be lost for ever. Rudimentary regulators such as the simple LM317 circuit used by many makers is no longer a viable method where high performance is essential. The settling time of the TPX system is exemplary, if not totally unique, in the world of high fidelity equipment.

The design of TPX2 doesn't finish at even this elevated point: Introduced at the output of the two DC channels is a network designed to syphon off a small percentage of the supply for storage in a revolutionary way and when required, accelerate the DC delivery in speed to the degree where even the fastest of high speed capacitors has even begun to dream of reacting.

All this dedication and endless hours spent in search of the perfect supply has reaped dividends for many enthusiasts in the enjoyment of music in the home. Once connected to your pre-amplifier, there emerges detail previously ignored by your equipment. Presented in a lucid and uncannily fluid manner, bass transients and textures come across as 'real' music instead of some computer generated noise. Leading edges of notes are lightning fast but accurately reproduced - decay of notes is a complete and totally natural experience. No programme, however complex, fazes the TPX - it allows unbridled access to all the music. Treble energies take on the kind of reality to make the hairs on the back of the neck..................
